A Dance Odyssey with Bel’Air

When I was first invited to watch a performance by Odyssey Dance Theatre, I was deeply moved. With a youthful, uncontaminated spirit yet consummate dancing skills befitting of professional dancers, choreographer Danny Tan inducted the audience into a genesis of creative chaos. His focus and persistence on the stirring of life was the most touching scene. Occasional whistles from the pipa or flute left a profound auditory impact. This may be a modern dance presentation, but an oriental longing lies hidden deep within.

When Odyssey Dance Theatre met Bel’Air

Three years later, the same scene touched the heart of Bel’Air Regional CEO Miss Lee Xiang Yin. Choreographer Danny Tan’s artistic persistence had awakened the passion and support which Miss Lee always has towards culture and the arts. With amazing speed and precision, Miss Lee started to evaluate the possibility of sponsoring Odyssey Dance Theatre and simultaneously put her thoughts into actions.

Thus, the start of Bel'Air's legend of sponsorship in Singapore. With feelings of gratitude, choreographer Danny Tan will lead a team of professional dancers from Odyssey Dance Theatre to perform a dance of poetic splendour during the Bel'Air Singapore Awards Presentation in March. This will be a perfect expression of corporate and artistic synthesis!

An Odyssey Revealed

Founded in June 1999 by Danny Tan (Artistic Director/Choreographer), Odyssey Dance Theatre seeks to explore uncharted territories and provide a new creative voice in contemporary dance. It is described by many as a fledgling and prolific dance company, with vibrant and inspiring works that have access to both stillness and technical dynamics.

January 2000 saw ODT in its debut performance “Odyssey to the Sublime”. This has led to other successful repertoires which garnered impressive accolades in Asia and beyond. Under the directorship of Danny, who was accredited with numerous local arts awards and received his Master in Fine Arts (Dance) from the Queensland University of Technology with a rich store of overseas dance experiences, ODT is well-poised to elevate local contemporary dance onto the global stage while spearheading local awareness of dance artistry. As it is, ODT has already embarked on a series of local initiatives and international collaboration and is empowered to go further with Bel’Air’s sponsorship. Truly a borderless exploration of the avant-garde!

Significance of Corporate Sponsorships for the Arts

The significane of such sponsorship will have a profound impact, especially in Singapore where we are faced with constant criticism that the quality of our local arts groups simply do not match our possession of the world's top-notch performance haven -- Esplanade, Theatres on the Bay. However, it is not true that Singapore has no artistic talents. On the contrary, being situated at a unique multi-cultural crossroads, Singapore has the necessary conditions to develop the arts. All that are needed for local arts groups are more appreciaton and practical aid, so as to allow artists to fully submerge themselves in artistic creation without being burdended by countless worries. Seen in this light, corporate sponsorship and adoption of arts groups have become the trend and main driving force for the blossoming of the arts in advanced countries.

Bel’Air’s corporate sponsorship of an arts group serves as a great example to corporate entities. On the other hand, artists’ reciprocation towards the corporate entity by way of artistic creation will help to elevate the corporate culture. These will have positive and inspiring effects when viewed from all perspectives.

Experience the Beauty of the Arts

When expressing his passion and vision for the arts, Founder and Artistic Director of Odyssey Dance Theatre Danny Tan said, “I hope that more Singaporeans will be able to experience the beauty of the arts, that the arts and cultural scene in Singapore will be able to unleash its limitless potential in the new century to enrich and comfort our spirit, that more Singaporeans will be able to join hands with artists to grasp the importance of an artistic life and experience that wonderful artistic dimension. I hope that all these will fill our lives with vibrancy and radiance, like a blossoming sunflower.”

I believe these sentiments are similarly Bel’Air’s intention and heartfelt wishes in its sponsorship of Odyssey Dance Theatre. This cocktail potency of aromatherapy and art will bring business and culture into a whole new world, allowing its fragrance and elegance to seep into public consciousness.
