This reputable institute, established since 1983, initially placed its research emphasis on the conformity between molecular organisms and traditional bio-chemistry. It has since evolved to the present stage where it focuses on the conformity among molecules, cells and growth biology. Always in tune with modern advances in biology, it aims to explain the mysteries and wonder in life, thereby transcending all specificities to develop an alternative conformity pattern.
In order to sharpen the competitive edge of our aromatherapy products and gradually incorporate them into the realm of bio-technology, Bel’Air embarked on an official working relationship with the Institute of Bio-technology of Taiwan National Yang Ming University in 2001 and established our exclusive Bel’Air Bio-tech Research Centre. Besides using practical analysis of clinical results to ensure excellent product quality, we also employ in-depth scientific methods to validate the safety of products, so as to give consumers peace of mind in their enjoyment of aromatherapy. Our ultimate goal is to enter the realm of bio-tech aromatherapy, allowing aromatherapy to transcend the usual domains of air purification and fragrance and enabling its rich source of nourishment to be validated. These will allow us to truly realise our vision of air management and healthcare.
(1) Reasons for Engaging in Essential Oil Research
(b) An Established and Substantial Market which will be Enhanced by Academic Support: Propelled by the efforts of Bel’Air, the essential oil market in Taiwan has already reached a few billion Taiwan dollars. More research support will definitely boost its further development.
(c) Bel’Air’s Strong Ambitions for Bio-technology: In our many discussions with Chairman Huang Shu Li, we are impressed by Bel’Air’s strong ambitions for developing bio-technology for essential oil.
OilsEssential oils can release their effects by entering the body via the methods below:
(a) Entering the Nose Cavity: Recognition by the millions of receptors on the upper part of the mucous membrane will lead to stimulation of the nerves. This will be sent to the limbic system at the side of the brain, which will lead to various reactions.
(b) Absorption by the Skin: Enters the body’s circulatory system.
(c) Absorption by the Lungs: Enters the body’s circulatory system. Essential oil molecules are different from ordinary chemical drugs. They will not stay in the body for too long. For healthy people, most essential oil molecules will be purged out of the body through urine or perspiration in about 3 to 6 hours.
(4) Research of the Bacteria Elimination Properties of Essential Oil
In August and September 2000, Yang Ming Institute of Bio-technology tested the effects of four kinds of plant essential oils on the total amount of minute organisms in household spaces. It was discovered that four kinds of essential oils, namely, Green Tea, Ginseng, Eucalyptus and Lavande, demonstrated strong bacteria elimination properties.
For germs, Green Tea essential oil demonstrated the strongest germicidal prowess, eliminating 90% of germs after 90 minutes of aromatherapy. This was followed by Ginseng essential oil which eliminated 80% of germs, then Lavande essential oil (66%) and lastly Eucalyptus essential oil (52%). For fungus, Lavande essential oil delivered the strongest effects with 71% elimination capability. This was followed by Green Tea essential oil (61%), then Eucalyptus essential oil (48%) and finally Ginseng essential oil (38%).
(5) Safety Research of Essential Oil Organisms
Yang Ming Institute of Bio-techology signed a contract with Bel’Air to conduct research into Green Tea, Ginseng, Eucalyptus, Green Bamboo and Fleur de Lotus in 2001, examining issues such as their chemical compositions and organic safety. In this research, a standard Ames test was first used to determine mutagenicity in the five kinds of essential oils before and after aromatherapy. Presence of mutagenicity will activate DNA chromosome changes. Our results indicate that the five kinds of essential oils do not indicate mutagenicity even when increased to very high concentration, be it before or after aromatic combustion.
(6) Safety Index of Essential Oils
All essential oils used for the purpose of aromatherapy must be tested for the safety index. This includes testing for oral consumption toxicity, skin irritability, sensitisation, phototoxicity and other possible unfavourable effects. For instance, almond essential oil contains drugs for the nerves and has a high level of oral consumption toxicity. Pine essential oil induces a high level of skin irritability after oxidisation by sunlight. All essential oils used by Bel’Air at present, such as Eucalyptus, Thyme, Lavande, etc, are very mild and have a high safety index.
(7) Chemical Composition of Essential Oils
The chemical components of various plant essential oils can produce a table of different effects. From this table, we can not only understand the chemical composition of essential oils in brief, we can also predict other possible effects. For instance, Rose Rouge essential oil mainly comprises terpenealchol and it is able to provide warmth and stimulation. Using analytical instruments of meteorology, our research centre has analysed five kinds of Bel’Air essential oils, namely, Ginseng, Green Tea, Green Bamboo, Eucalyptus and Fleur de Lotus. We have also produced a table of effects pertaining to the composition. Results indicate that after aromatherapy, the composition shows an obvious change and a larger variety of essential oil molecules are emitted. This translates to a wider range of effects.
(8) Future Development of Bel’Air Aroma Bio-technology
We would like to list two suggestions pertaining to the future development of Bel’Air:
(a) With a well-developed marketing network as foundation, we aim to create a bio-tech enterprise that is buttressed on intensive scientific research.
(b) We aim to create a graceful and healthy lifestyle through the greater utilisation of plant essential oils.Yangsen Biotechnology Company will assist Bel’Air in the long-term development of its bio-technology, establish a system of quality control, ensure product quality, conduct research into the unique effects of essential oil, develop new essential oil products, etc.
Yangsen supports the establishment of a Bel’Air research entity so as to elevate the technological standard of Bel’Air. With concrete and interactive research, Yangsen would be able to support the rapid growth of the Bel’Air marketing system. This is also the greatest assurance of Bel'Air's quest for premium product quality.
